SR 1020 was developed and released by Seed Research of Oregon, using germplasm obtained from the University of Arizona. During the period 1971-1976, 93 clones were collected by Dr. Robert Kneebone from old golf greens in Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma in Arizona; the Palm Springs area of California; and from other researchers in the Southern United States. They were evaluated for heat tolerance, turf quality, and ability to thrive under Tucson conditions.

In 1976, twenty-six clones which appeared to have the best potential were planted in a replicated test and mowed regularly at 1/4 inch as a putting green, but received only minimal fertilization and irrigation with no pesticides of any sort applied. By 1982, many of these clones disappeared entirely and most were invaded by weeds. The five parental clones of SR 1020 however, maintained a dense stand and good quality throughout the test period. These five clones are characterized by excellent putting green growth habit, fine-textured, uniform turf, dark green color, heat and drought tolerance, improved resistance to Pythium blight, tolerance of low levels of fertility, and high seed yield. This ability to survive has continued to be shown in high stress environments on actual golf courses worldwide.

SR 1020 was included in both the fairway and putting green trials of the 1989 National Bentgrass Test and in the putting green trials of the 1993 Test. In tests it has demonstrated the aggressive growth and stress tolerance necessary to resist Poa annua invasion.

SR 1119 is the newest in the line of bentgrasses developed by Seed Research of Oregon. This exciting new variety is the culmination of nine years of extensive testing and evaluation. The long term performance of your greens and fairways is important to us, and we believe any breeding program should include these long term trials. You can trust Seed Research to release bentgrass varieties only after extensive golf course evaluations.

SR 1119 is derived from the progeny of the five clones of Providence germplasm which have been in trial at the University of Rhode Island since the 1960's. Sixty-three plants were selected from 1500 plants derived from Providence, based on fine texture, color, and number of seedheads in 1987. The progeny of the plants with the best appearance and seed yields underwent evaluation in two experimental greens, planted in 1988 and 1990, at the University of Rhode Island. This enabled the selection of five clones from the sixty-three which showed improved dollar spot resistance and turf quality at this location, and showed very uniform appearance in color and texture.

SR 1119 then underwent two additional cycles of selection to insure good seed yields and uniformity. In addition, the seed was sent to researchers and golf course superintendents starting in 1993 for further evaluations. These evaluations have been very positive with superintendents anxiously awaiting SR 1119's release.

Evaluation has been underway at the University of Rhode Island since 1988. All data indicates that SR 1119 is a significant improvement for dollar spot resistance and turf quality. Testing has been underway since 1993 and 1994 at The Honors Course and The Legends in Tennessee; North Shore Country Club, Northbrook, Illinois; Westwood Country Club, Vienna, Virginia; Bethesda Country Club, Bethesda, Maryland; Chagrin Valley Country, Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and The Country Club of Rochester, Rochester, New York. Long-term results on multiple courses will help better define the strengths of this variety. SR 1119, when combined with Providence and SR 1020 (our two well known and proven varieties) make up our new Dominant blend called Dominant Plus.

JF SR7100SR 7100 is a versatile, new colonial bentgrass which can be used on golf courses, for both fairways and roughs, and in home lawns. In areas as divergent as Alabama, Maryland, Ontario, Rhode Island, Kansas, Washington and Oregon, under low maintenance conditions with reduced nitrogen, colonial bentgrasses have shown excellent turf quality and the ability to survive.

SR 7100 is a very fine-textured colonial bentgrass with an upright leaf growth. Selected for its upright growth pattern it does not false crown like many other bentgrasses. SR 7100 has a medium, dark green color which it retains well into the fall. It has excellent dollar spot resistance and improved brown patch resistance. SR 7100 is a very good seed producer, so excellent quantities of seed are available for golf courses and homeowners.

SR 7100 used on golf course fairways is pleasing to superintendents and golfers alike. Its upright growth pattern provides an excellent turf at the 3/8 to 1/2 inch height of cut demanded by many golfers, with less thatch buildup than other bentgrass varieties. It can also be utilized in roughs, where the low maintenance qualities of colonial bentgrass can shine. Colonial bentgrasses survive adversity and in many areas of the country are found in sites that have received no fertilization, irrigation, or management for many years. Well manicured home lawns can utilize SR 7100 at cutting heights of 1/2 to 2 inches, with reduced false crowning.

Throughout a five year, low maintenance trial at Oregon State University, the mixture of SR 7100 colonial bentgrass and SR 5100 Chewings fescue produced outstanding results when mown at 1/2 inch. This mixture is being used on several golf courses in the Pacific Northwest.

In a high management, turfgrass putting green overseeding trial conducted at Clemson University in South Carolina, the mixture of SR 7100 and SR 5100 ranked the highest in establishment, quality, density and leaf texture in ratings taken October 1997 through June 1998.

Colonial bentgrasses have traditionally been recommended for golf course use in New England, the Pacific Northwest, and the British Isles. Recent successes have suggested a much wider area of adaptation. A study of alternative turf species in the mid-western United States showed colonial bentgrasses performed well under low maintenance conditions in this area. Improved colonial bentgrasses have also performed well in many other areas from the southeast to the midwest and the mid-Atlantic. Due to their high turf quality, they are also being utilized in some mixtures for overseeding dormant warm season grasses.

JF SR7200SR 7200 velvet bentgrass is the first velvet seed in 30 years released by Seed Research to meet the unique environmental needs of golf course professionals and golfers. The result of a long term improvement program by Dr. Richard Skogley of the University of Rhode Island, in cooperation with Seed Research, SR 7200 velvet bentgrass combines the low maintenance aspects of older velvets with a dark green color and good seed yields. Velvet bentgrass is the finest-textured, densest bentgrass.

Velvet bentgrasses have long been recognized as forming the best putting surface. Much of the mystique and putting quality of many older golf courses into the 1960's was due to the predominance of velvet bentgrass in their putting greens, from the "South German" bentgrass they had been seeded with. Under conditions of acid soils and low fertility velvet bentgrasses were usually the primary bent present. With the increased usage of water and fertilizers, the velvet bentgrasses developed softer, weaker growth and began to suffer. Due to excessive management a low maintenance bentgrass developed a reputation as requiring high levels of management. SR 7200 allows a return to the highest quality putting surface.

SR 7200 has a darker color than 'Kingstown' velvet bentgrass. It retains this color even with the low fertility that is best for velvets. Velvets do best with only 2-4 lbs. of nitrogen per year so they are ideal for sensitive sites. Since velvets do well on acid soils, use of ammonium sulfate as the fertilizer source is a natural method of Poa annua control without herbicides. Properly grown velvet bentgrass is very disease resistant. SR 7200 is very low growing and can be mown as low as 3/32 inch. It can also be used for home lawns. In 1940 Sprague wrote that velvet bentgrass has the widest range of usefulness of any bent species. SR 7200 has also performed well in fairway trials at Rutgers University in New Jersey. It showed high levels of resistance to brown patch, copper spot, and dollar spot.

Velvet bentgrass is very drought tolerant and SR 7200 has been selected to preserve this characteristic. Overwatering encourages Poa annua and lush growth that is less wear tolerant, so it should be avoided.

Velvet bentgrasses are the most shade tolerant of the bentgrasses. It is often difficult to grow other bentgrasses in these sites so SR 7200 is highly recommended for shaded greens.

Due to the density of velvet late summer to fall aerification is recommended to avoid excessive thatch. Topdressing should be applied at this time and after monthly verticutting.
